Food businesses falling within an average scale are eligible for a state license. Considering their turnover falls between 12 lakhs and 20 crores. Traders, including wholesalers, distributors, and manufacturers, shall opt for an FSSAI State License.

Additionally, FSSAI State License is ideal for businesses that operate across multiple states or covers an entire state. Crossing boarders and Check posts becomes crucial at time to time with an FSSAI Basic Registration because Registrations are considered to be small businesses therefore State License are advised for interstate food businesses.

Manufacturers and re-packers often encounter confusion and doubts regarding the appropriate license or registration to pursue. In cases where there is a doubt, if your turnover is below 12 Lakhs but your business nature falls under FSSAI State License criteria, it is advisable to apply for a state license.

Same as if the yearly turnover goes up from 12 Lakhs the business needs to apply for an FSSAI State License. Furthermore, the yearly turnover and size of a business significantly influence its eligibility to apply for an FSSAI License or FSSAI Registration.

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India)

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India), established in 2008 by the Indian government. It is a regulatory body tasked with licensing and monitoring food safety in the country. The 1.4 billion Indians who consume food products and the organizations involved in the production, handling, and sale of these products are required to comply with the Food Safety Acts and Regulations enforced by FSSAI.

Every food business in the country is shall have a food license, indicating that the business is verified and registered with the Food Safety Department. All kinds of businesses directly or indirectly related to food products shall have an FSSAI License. Prominently displaying the Food Safety License number. Furthermore, any food business that does not possess a valid FSSAI License or a Registration does not have permission to process, as stipulated by Section 31 of the Food Safety and Standards Act.

Any business that comes in contact with a food product requires a food license. A small startup by an house wife from her home or a large-scale business that involved in exports these each business requires an FSSAI License / Registration regardless of the size and nature of the businesses.

Yet each food business does not require same kind of license.
